By Ferry:

The main link to the northern isles from the UK mainland is Aberdeen via ‘Northlink’ Ferries. Shetland also acts as a hub for other Nordic destinations like Norway, Iceland and Faroe via Smyril Line ferries.

By Air:

Most flights into Shetland from the UK mainland originate from Aberdeen, Edinburgh or Glasgow. 

When on the Islands: 

Buses are available to Sandness normally twice per day from Lerwick (Shetland’s main town) and the airport has a bus connection service. However, the most convenient route is via car journey. There are numerous car hire companies in Lerwick with outlet’s at the airport also. See links below:

 How to get to Crawton:

 From the Airport (Journey time by car is approx 1 ½ hours):

Take the A970 north towards Lerwick. Some 5 miles/8 km beyond Lerwick  is the juntion for the A971 to Sandness. Follow this road until you reach ‘Sandness’. See detailed directions below.

 From the ferry terminal in Lerwick (journey time approx 40 mins by car):

 Take the A970 north out of Lerwick until you reach the junction of the A971. Follow the A971 to Sandness.

 On arrival in Sandness:

 Take the first right hand turning towards ‘Bousta’. Follow this road until you reach a red telephone box (approx ½ km/ ¼ mile) on the left hand side. Immediately across from the telephone box, up on the hill to the right hand side, sits the croft of Crawton. The access road turning is a short distance further down on the right hand side.

 Don’t panic!

The last 6 miles/10 km of the journey between the turning for ‘Walls’ and Sandness is via single track and winding roads. The roads are in good condition and have numerous passing places. However, the surrounding area is not populated and so the journey can seem to take a long time.  I mention this simply to give comfort that you will get there and you are on the right road!
